Pre-Conference Producers Seminar

Friday, May 25 from 9 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

This all-day event will feature ten film and television producers from ten different production companies from both coasts. These producers are actively looking for material and are more than open to unproduced and/or uprepresented screenwriters.

Shelly MellottThe first part of the morning will be a panel of all ten producers moderated by Shelly Mellott, Editor-in-Chief of Script Magazine. They will also field questions from the audience.

Aaron MendelsohnAn hour before lunch there will be a pitching workshop presented by Aaron Mendelsohn (also a Mentor at the Conference, and also a motion picture director, producer and executive-producer). Aaron will be presenting The Art of the Five-Minute Pitch.
After lunch each Producer will have his/her own classroom where they will will accept five-minute private interviews by appointment where they will hear pitches or simply offer consultation. These producers are looking for writers. You are looking for a producer. SFeSC is thrilled to be able to present this unique opportunity for all who attend. The Producers are:



Scott Bernstein,
IGNITE ENTERTAINMENT - Los Angeles, CA
(Six String Samurai, Dancer TX Population 81, Getting Over Allison)

After stints with Peters Entertainment Group, The Draizin Company (based at Walt Disney Pictures), and Mostow/Lieberman, Scott Bernstein joined Ignite Entertainment in the fall of 1999 as Senior VP, Production and Development. Currently he is producing “Confidence” for Fine Line/New Line Pictures and is executive producing “Click” for Screen Gems/Sony Pictures and “The Return To Morality” at Lions Gate Films. Ignite Entertainment has produced over eight films in the past two years for TriStar/Sony, Samuel Goldwyn, and Sony/Screen Gems. Ignite’s Six String Samurai won the grand audience prize at Slamdance 1999.



Tony BillTony Bill,
BARNSTORM FILMS - Venice, CA, (Taxi Driver, Untaimed Heart, My Bodyguard, Five Corners, The Sting)

Tony Bill is best known as the consumate independent producer/director with a reputation for discovering new talent including first time writers Terrence Malic (Deadhead Miles), David S. Ward (Steelyard Blues), Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver), Robert F. Thompson (Hearts of the West), Desmond Nakano (Boulevard Nights), John Byrum (Harry and Walter Go To New York), Curtis Hanson (The Little Dragons), Alan Ormsby (My Bodyguard), and John Patrick Shanley (Five Corners). Of course most of these writers went on to further outstanding successes.



Stacy CodikowStacy Codikow,
CODIKOW FILMS - Los Angeles, CA (Fatal Instinct, Under the Hula Moon, To Kill For)

Stacy Codikow is an award-winning feature film producer who began her career as a producer's coordinator on the Emmy Award-winning series, Cagney and Lacey. At the age of 24 she established Codikow Films to produce independent features. Her credits also include Hollywood Heartbreak, Blackout, and Lonely Place. Stacy is a member of the Producer's Guild of America, the Writer's Guild of America, Women in Film, and USC Cinema Alumni Association, and others.


David FosterDavid Foster,
DAVID FOSTER PRODUCTIONS - Burbank, CA (McCabe and Mrs. Miller; The Drowning Pool; Heroes; Running Scared; Short Circuit 1 & 2; The River Wild; The Getaway 1 & 2; and The Mask of Zorro)

Early in David Foster’s career he co-owned a public relations firm. Some of his distinguished clients included Richard Attenborough, Faye Dunaway, Clint Eastwood, James Garner, Norman Jewison, Steve McQueen, San Peckinpah, Robert Redford, Jean Seberg and Peter Sellers. Subsequently McQueen, Attenborough, and Jewison encouraged him to embark upon a producing career. He did so in 1970 (see credits above). David is presently preparing “Collateral Damage” for Warner Brothers, “Hart’s War” for MGM, and “The Core” for Paramount.



Strath HamiltonStrath Hamilton,
TRICOAST STUDIOS - Los Angeles, CA (Never Talk To Strangers,The Set Up, Escape From Atlantis, Under Seige 2, The Chill Factor, Madison Miracle, The Proposition). Strath is currently in production on the gritty football drama "Turnstiles" for Great Life Films. After a European film festival run, The Proposition, a film he directed, is now playing on Showtime. Another film Strath directed for MGM/UA, The Set Up, has been recut as a feature for international release by MGM after it's successful run on Showtime. He directed the off-beat comedy/thriller Betrayal of the Dove, written by Robbie Benson. An independent production of his, Diving In, initially released through Skouras Pictures, was later picked up by Paramount Pictures for distribution. His film noir thriller Shadows in the Storm was released internationally by TriMark Pictures. Having directed such film stars as John Ritter, Billy Zane, James Coburn, Harvey Korman, Alan Thicke, Kristy Swanson, Burt Young, Carrie Snodgrass, Margaret Avery, and Talia Shire, Strath's reputation as an "actor's director" has landed him assignments with Academy and Emmy Award nominated artists on three continents. Strath Hamilton's films have played theatrically in over one hundred countries. He is an outstanding, award winning director of international repute. His Tricoast Studios is currently constructing a new studio in Los Angeles.



Martin KatzMartin R. Katz,
THE MOUNT COMPANY - Hollywood, CA (Night Falls on Manhattan, Death & the Maiden, Bull Durham, Tequila Sunrise)

Martin Katz has worked extensively in story development and production in both motion pictures and television. He is currently Vice President, Creative Affairs for the (Thom) Mount Company developing both feature film and television projects. He was Director of Development for Rosemont Production International (Purgatory/TNT, High Noon/TBS), Director of Development/Associate Producer for Michael Meltzer Productions (Sometimes They Come Back... Again/Trimark Pictures), Assistant to Producer Michael Phillips at Lighthouse Productions (MIMIC/Dimension Films, Close Encounters), and Assistant to the producers at Ivan Reitman Productions.



Tony MichelmanTony Michelman,
SMITH-HEMION - Los Angeles, CA

Smith-Hemion has been making quality TV for thirty years with more Emmys than any other independent production company in history. Tony Michelman - a screenwriter with numerous credits, both in TV and Feature Films and one Emmy nomination has been brought in as President of the most recent addition to Smith-Hemion -- the Film Division. Already such stars as Richard Dreyfuss, Danny Glover and Peter Hyams have been attached to projects.



Morris RuskinMorris Ruskin,
SHORELINE ENTERTAINMENT - Los Angeles, CA

Coming from an illustrious background where he produced Glengarry Glen Ross for Zupnik Enterprises, Morris established Shoreline Entertainment in 1998. Since then he has produced the theatrically released Brittle Glory --AKAThe Continued Adventures of Reptile Man and His Faithful Sidekick Tadpole, Executive Produced Matter of Trust, and Detour, as well as The Godson starring Rodney Dangerfield and Dom Deluise which was released by Lions Gate. Morris also Executive Produced The Visit, starring Obba Babatunde, Rae Dawn Chong, Billy Dee Williams and Philicia Rashad, The King’s Guard, starring Ron Perlman, Eric Roberts and Leslie Anne Down, and Co-Executive Produced Price of Glory, starring Jimmy Smits.He most recently produced the David Mamet drama, Lakeboat directed by Joe Mantegna and starring Andy Garcia, Charles Durning, Robert Forster, Denis Leary, Peter Falk and George Wendt. From high quality screenplays Shoreline typically produces well-cast, well-produced movies that are stylish, sometimes quirky, but always commercial.



Chiz Shultz Chiz Schultz,
CHIZ SCHULTZ, INC. - Nylac, NY (A Soldier's Story , Once Upon a Classic (TV), Ganja & Hess, The Angel Levine, The Baron)

Chiz has more than thirty years' experience producing motion pictures and live, taped and filmed television programs. His productions have won Academy Award, EMMY and ACE Cable nominations and an ACE award, the Peabody Award, New York Film and Television Award, San Francisco International Film Award, and Ohio State University Award. Credits: "Walter and Henry" (Showtime); Paul Robeson: Here I Stand (PBS' "American Masters" series)recently won the International Documentary Association prize for Best Strand Documentary; A Raisin in the Sun (American Playhouse); Seize the Day (American Playhouse); A Soldier's Story - nominated for three Academy Awards (Columbia Pictures); Slings and Arrows (Independent); Too Far to Go (acquired and distributed by Francis Ford Coppola's Zoetrope Productions). Chiz' latest movie for Showtime, Walter and Henry, is currently in post-production. His many other credits are impressive and too extensive to list.
