Design notes:

We used an aliased font (Mini 7 Condensed from Pixel Productions) in this design. Aliased fonts are designed to be used at specific point sizes, 7 point in this case, and are also meant to be saved as a graphic, not used as HTML text. Most people will not have the specially designed, aliased font on their computer and the browser will just default to whatever font they’ve set as their default font.

This aliased font allowed us to create a lot of very small text nav buttons that are very crisp and readable, without any of the blurry effect that occurs in small, anti-alised type.

Aliased type can be compressed much more efficiently (as a GIF file) because there are no extra colors being created (as there are in the anti-aliasing process) to achieve a blurry, smooth appearing edge where curves and slants occur in the type character design.
